Grinding Wheel Coating For Cutting & Drilling Tools

A grinding wheel is a useful tool for construction. Given the right roughness of grit, such a wheel can be used to quickly carve designs into a wide variety of materials, and the use of wheels with a succeeding number of continually finer grit may even deliver a mirror finish on a sufficiently hard or reflective surface. The key to successfully getting these or any other job done is to understand how this tool achieves its abrasiveness.

All kinds of grinding tools, including the wheel, make use of bonding abrasives that consist of two parts: The cutting grains or abrasive mixture, and the bonding mixture that holds the abrasive in place while the tool is being used. The kind of abrasive, ratio of abrasive to bonding and distribution of abrasive and bonding mixtures across the surface of the grinding wheel are what give the tool its particular characteristics suitable to a given job.

The most common abrasive is aluminum oxide, usually used for grinding carbon steel, hard bronze and other metals. For general grinding applications on steel and steel alloys, a combination of aluminum and zirconium oxides may be used called zirconia alumina. Silicon carbide may be used for non-ferrous materials such as stone and rubber, as well as for chilled iron, soft bronze, aluminum, and brass. For use on particularly tough materials, wheels may be coated with diamond abrasive, which is the hardest naturally occurring substance known to man. Diamond is at the extreme end of the Mohs scale of hardness with a rating of 10, making it the perfect ultra-abrasive cutting material.

Also, every grinding wheel has what is called a ‘grit size.’ This is the average size of the grains of abrasive used in a particular wheel. The higher the number, the finer the grain. Therefore, the job becomes smoother and more moderately paced.

Tunco Manufacturing is a manufacturer of high-quality, tungsten carbide coating for drilling and grinding equipment, including the above mentioned grinding wheel. Over 29 years of experience and craftsmanship goes into every tool, and backed by warranty.
